The Properties And Applications Of Aluminum Sulfat

Aluminum sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Al2(SO4)3 and a molecular weight of 342.15. It usually appears as a white orthorhombic crystalline powder with a sweet taste. Aluminum sulfate is easily soluble in water but insoluble in ethanol. In water, aluminum sulfate generates aluminum hydroxide after hydrolysis, and its aqueous solution can generate basic aluminum sulfate when boiled for a long time.
Aluminum sulfate appears industrially as gray-white flakes, granules or blocks, which may be light green due to low iron salt content, or may cause the surface to turn yellow due to the oxidation of iron salts. It is non-toxic, but the dust may irritate the eyes.

Aluminum sulfate is widely used in many fields:

1. Aluminum sulfate is used in the paper industry as a precipitant for rosin gum, wax emulsion and other rubber materials, and as a flocculant in water treatment.

2. Aluminum sulfate is also used to make alum, aluminum white, petroleum decolorizing and deodorizing agents, pharmaceutical raw materials, artificial gemstones and high-grade ammonium alum, etc.

3. In medical treatment, aluminum sulfate can be used to treat certain diseases, such as chronic gastritis and gastric ulcer, and to make oral blood supplements and other medicines.

4. In cosmetics, it is used as an antiperspirant cosmetic raw material (astringent).

5. Aluminum sulfate is also used as analytical reagent, mordant, tanning agent, oil decolorizing agent, wood preservative, etc.

6. Aluminum sulfate is also used as a stabilizer for albumin pasteurization (including liquid or frozen whole eggs, egg whites or egg yolks), and in the fire protection industry to form foam fire extinguishing agents with baking soda and foaming agents.

7. Iron-free aluminum sulfate can be used in the production of high-grade paper, high-grade fabrics, food leavening agents, white rubber, white leather, etc.
