The main applications of ferrous sulfate in sewage treatment

1. As a reducing agent: Ferrous sulfate is a strong reducing agent that can be used to reduce hexavalent chromium in chromium-containing wastewater from electroplating plants to trivalent chromium. Compared with the use of reducing agents such as sodium sulfite, sodium bisulfite, and sulfur dioxide, this method has the advantage of not producing toxic and carcinogenic irritating chlorine compounds and is low in price.

2. As a flocculant: Ferrous sulfate is widely used as a flocculant. It has the characteristics of fast settling speed, large sludge particles, small and dense sludge volume, and good color removal effect. It is particularly suitable for treating textile wastewater such as printing and dyeing, washing, etc. It is non-toxic and conducive to biological growth. It is suitable for use in subsequent sewage treatment systems with biochemical treatment processes. As a flocculant, ferrous sulfate can replace polymeric aluminum, basic aluminum chloride, polymeric iron, aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride, etc.

3. As a biological nutrient: Ferrous sulfate increases the activity of microorganisms in the biochemical system, thereby ensuring and improving the efficiency and stability of the system.

4. As a precipitant: Ferrous sulfate can form precipitates with sulfides, phosphates, etc., thereby removing sulfides, phosphates, etc. For example, it is used to treat sulfur-containing wastewater from printing and dyeing plants.
When using ferrous sulfate for sewage treatment, it is necessary to gradually add it according to changes in water quality and quantity, and determine the optimal dosage through a beaker experiment.
